Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts

Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts

Along with Elevator Action and Sword of Vermillion (one of my favorite Genesis games), Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts was released today for the Virtual Console.

I have enjoyed all of the games in this series quite a bit even though they are some of the toughest games I have ever played. The two major factors that made it so difficult is that you could only withstand two hits before you died and you are required to go through the entire game twice to actually beat it. Combine this with no save feature and you have a game that can easily become an evil and frustrating endeavor. The benefit of downloading it on the Wii is the fact that you can pause and save it exactly where you are and come back later. Ooo if only I had that back in the day.

The Ghosts ‘n Goblin series has always been a tough group to crack. In all actuality I have never been able to complete the original. I’ve only made it to the final door the second time through. I was able to complete Ghouls ‘n Ghosts for the Genesis as well as Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts for the SNES. All three are excellent games and widely known for their difficulty. I would have to say that the graphics and gameplay of Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts holds up quite well considering its age.

If you enjoy a challenging game that would test your old school side scrolling skills, this is definitely a great game to try out.

I got the PSP version this past holidays and Im loving it. Makes me remember the ol’ days when I used to waste soooo many quarters on the arcade playing this game. Havent been able to complete it yet, being so busy and all, but your post made me pick up the PSP and play it again.

Never played any other release for any other console, so Im not sure of the differences between them, but on this version you have lives and different levels of armor. They kept the classic 2D feel, but improoved the graphix with 3D.

Im a sucker for old school games, and this one is on top of my list.

    Good post!!!

I’ve been really tempted to pick the PSP version up but since I don’t have a PSP yet, it would be a mute point.

Ultimate Ghosts ‘n Goblins is actually a whole revamp of Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts. There is enough that has been changed that I would consider it a whole new game in the series.

I also am a sucker for old school and I’m glad that you tapped into the game again because of my post 🙂
